2008 4-H Market Steer Project

"Dip"

This year Megan chose a steer that caught eveyone's eye as soon as he was born. He is out of a simmental cross cow owned by her grandfather.

He has been named "Dip".

"Ice"

This steer is to be the buddy steer but Merl figures he should be the main guy. We will see what happens in May.

He is from a Speckle Park cross cow we raised.

He is "Ice"

So as you can see we have your meat! We keep it until May or even June 2008 and from there you tell us when and where you want it delivered. If you are intrested in see how your meat will stack up to the local competion, come out and check out either the local 4-H Acheivement Day on Saturday, May 24th 2008 or the Regional Show and Sale held in St. Walburg on Monday, May 26, 2008.

2007 Cow / Calf Project

'Roxy' & 'Tigerlily'

2006's Grand Champion 4-H Heifer project animal, 'Moovin Zpotz Roxy Amber 4R' born May 25, 2005, has now moved into the Cow Calf Class. On April 6 at 8:30 pm 'Roxy' produced a health, 78lbs, Purebred (F5 Status), speckled heifer. A project her and our 2005 King of the Ring Reserve Champion bull, Moovin Zpotz Rum Runner 1R, had been working on last summer.

Megan had been waiting and worrying for this day to come and when it did she would have slept outside in the barn if she could have. Megan inprinted on 'Tigerlily' so well that at only a few days old she would follow you around while you checked cows or were just out there. Halter breaking was going to be a snap.

At our club's May 26th Acheivement Day 'Roxy', 'Tigerlily', Justice and Megan did great, they were competeing against a very complete Simmental heifer with an early February calf, who they beat out as a heifer in 2006. The judge didn't have anything bad to say about our group, just that the age of the two calves was about the major difference. Both cows were doing well with their respective calves and it was great to see the two FEMALE members bringing back their heifers as cows since that is what the cattle business is all about.

On the following Monday, May 28th this foursome when to the Regional Show and Sale in St. Walburg and competed against the same cow calf pair from our club and another pair from St. Walburg. Again we had the youngest calf and probably the youngest cow, this judge said out of the three cows 'Roxy' could out walk the others ones, but her teats were a little out of line for his likeing. But all in all Megan was pleased with the two shows and is looking forward to showing 'Roxy' and 'Tigerlily' off this fall in the show rings.

A huge Thank You goes out to cousin Justice for his help with 'Tigerlily' without it Megan could not have gotten her cow calf pair in and out of the ring as well as she did.

2007  Market Steer Project

'Sterling'

This year 'Sterling' was the Market Steer project animal. He was a commercial steer with speckles off of a hereford cow that is buid like a brick, short legged and long body and one of our home grown Speckle Park bulls. This a brother to 'Riddock' last years project.

In November he weighed 700 lbs and in April he was 1030lbs. He had an average daily gain of 2.90lbs. This was all done with out a Ralgro implant since we were at Agribition when the club got together and did the implanting.

The steers were split in to three weights with Megan and 'Sterling ' placed second in the light weight class. The judge would have liked to see 'Sterling' have a lilltle bit more time at the food bucket. Then all the top two placed steers, from each weight class, went back in to the ring and the two heavy weights won it.

At the Regional Show and Sale in St. Walburg the following Monday, 'Sterling' was weighed and was 1034lbs. Again this judge would have liked to see a bit more finish on him, but will all those other steers Megan did well. 'Sterling' sold for $1.22 to a local business so Megan is now eyeing up the 2008 market steer project animal and has had one picked out for a few months.

This one will be off of a commercial Speckled cow we raised off of one of our own bulls. Hope to see you at one of the Shows and maybe you will go home with some great tasting meat as well.
